WASHINGTON _ As House Republicans struggle to produce their ambitious tax overhaul, President Donald Trump weighed in Wednesday with an off-topic suggestion: How about repealing part of Obamacare and use the money saved on health care for tax cuts?
The idea had already been rejected one day earlier by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, who had said it risked bogging down the process.
Repealing the Affordable Care Act's requirement that most people have insurance coverage would substantially decrease the number of people who have insurance - and therefore decrease the amount of money the federal government spends on Medicaid and subsidizing individual premiums on the Obamacare health exchanges.
Brady said in an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday that he fears the move could jeopardize tax reform, a concern held by many Republicans.
"I have a modest proposal for the soon-to-be-released tax legislation: repeal Obamacare's individual mandate", he wrote on Twitter.
"Look, I love these ideas from senators on health care, but what my constituents are looking at are for action on health care from our senators", Brady said. I'm still hopeful they can find a way forward.
Cotton argues the mandate, which requires people to have health insurance or pay a fine, should be repealed in tax reform. "So I say focus on jobs and growth and leapfrogging America to the lead pack worldwide".
