TN Governor says he will inspect all districts

TN oppn parties cry foul over guv’s meeting with officials

Politicians and officials in Tamil Nadu are mindful of the fact that Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi neighbouring Puducherry has already challenged the elected government on several policy and administrative decisions.

Along with Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani, he visited the solid waste management plant installed in a residential society in the industrial city.

On Wednesday, Purohit inspected the Gandhipuram bus stand in the textile city and took part in a cleaning drive as part of the Swachch Bharat Initiative.

Later, in the day, he held meetings with the district officials, including the collector, city police commissioner and corporation commissioner and other senior officials.

The Governor's meeting was held amid the accusations from the opposition that Narendra Modi government at the centre is interfering in the administration of the state government led by the faction-ridden AIADMK.

Officials who attended it said the Governor did not criticise anyone nor did he ask anyone to pursue a project.

"I have been carrying out inspections from yesterday".

On the other hand, Tamilnadu Ministers have said the visits made by the Governor will not affect the State's autonomy.

State Congress chief S Thirunavukkarasar said, "When we have an elected government, with a Chief Minister and ministers, the Governor need not to go to districts and meet officials".

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said there is no politics involved in the Governor's visit and the State's autonomy will be preserved at all costs.

District Collector TN Hariharan and Corporation Commissioner Dr Vijaykarthikeyan were among those present at the discussion.

Likewise, Higher Education Minister K P Anbalagan contended that the Governor's action would not amount to interference in administration.

This has set off a debate over whether the Governor overstepped his Constitutional remit and was interfering in the affairs of the district administration.

"It was also because the governor came from the same party as that of ruling party at the centre and the state".

"The review (by governor) only confirms that there is no Amma's government in the state".

Similarly, expelled AIADMK leader T T V Dhinakaran said the interference of the Governor in the State administration will bring the government to a standstill just like in Puducherry and New Delhi. "It is a shame that ministers welcome the review held by the governor".

Meanwhile, a section of Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) opposed the "unprecedented" meeting chaired by the Governor with the officials and attempted to stage a black flag demonstration on Tuesday in front of Circuit House, where the meeting was in progress. "Governor is trying to politically help the BJP in the two districts by trying to create an impression that the developmental works are happening at the behest of him who is a representative of the union government", he said.
