Authorities received 911 calls of shooting at multiple sites, including the Rancho Tehama Elementary School, Tuesday morning, Assistant Tehama County Sheriff Phil Johnston said.
Authorities said the shooting occurred around 8 a.m.in Rancho Tehama, near Red Bluff, Calif., about 120 miles northwest of Sacramento.
Police say the gunman fired into the school from outside its grounds. No motive is yet known.
About 100 law enforcement officials responded to "multiple scenes, I can think of at least five scenes", after the shooting, he said. A woman and another child were shot in a truck that was driving near the school and taken to the hospital, he added.
"It was very clear at the onset that we had a subject that was randomly picking targets", he said.
Johnston later said authorities had recovered a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the shooter.
The Eureka Times-Standard, a regional newspaper, reported that ten people had been injured in the shootings.
Enloe Medical Center said it had four patients from the shooting - one adult and three children. The cops were present at the spot and the emergency department have airlifted "multiple students" from the scene, with a 6-year-old reportedly among the injured.
"They went on an immediate lockdown", the sheriff said during a press conference. He said the neighbour "has been shooting lots of bullets lately - hundreds of rounds". "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".
Johnston said he was told the suspected shooter was killed by law enforcement gunfire.
