The Trump-Duterte drug war tango

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin talk during the family photo session at the APEC Summit in Danang, Vietnam, Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017. He was accompanied by, among others, Special Assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence Go.

President Rodrigo Duterte and Honeylet Avancena welcomed the VIPs.

"It was not Trump who raised it. Trump never raised it, honestly", Roque said.

Mr Duterte made the assertion on Thursday in a meeting with the Filipino community in Da Nang, Vietnam, where he and leaders from other Pacific Rim countries were gathered for a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. But the Philippines is a major non-NATO ally, meaning it has special treaty status with the USA, and the relationship between the two countries dates back to the 19th century and the Spanish-American War, when the US took control of the islands from Spain.

"When I become president, I'll order the police and the military to find these people and kill them". In December 2016, he said that during his time as mayor, he had personally killed at least three people.

"We are looking at helicopters, small arms and equipment for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, but we are still discussing the specifics", said the same military official who declined to be named because he was not authorised to talk to the press. Government forces killed 920 Maute fighters in the five-month gun battle in Marawi City which ended in October.

"Now, when Russian Federation gave us assistance at the time we needed it, the President said that this proves beyond all doubts that Russian Federation is a good friend and that he emphasized again that the arms are meant to fight terrorism", he said.

They also say it has uncomfortable similarities with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's salute.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke separately about the territorial rifts ahead of the ASEAN, East Asia summits and related meetings here with the US, China and other global players where the disputes are expected to get the spotlight, along with North Korea's nuclear threat and terrorism.

In an election campaign rally Duterte also said he was expelled from college for shooting a fellow student who was insulting him.

"I said, 'I am not raising any sovereign issue".

It provided a lighthearted introduction to the ASEAN meeting where rogue state North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un, Philippines' bloody drug war and its fight against ISIS is set to be high on the agenda. I can not escape that from my duty so I have every right to ask him. "The Philippines will buy brand new military armaments from Russian Federation because Russia is very good manufacturer of machines and equipment", he added. He said a charitable reading of the meeting would be that Duterte was alluding to human rights issues when he said the drug war was important as an issue of "human development". "He assured us again, 'Do not worry".
