Thanksgiving travel weather across Great Lakes region

On Thanksgiving Day 2017 we will have a cold front move straight from north to south across MI. Any significant snowfall should be confined to the highest of elevations as well as the northmost regions of New England.

Now while that is the big picture, there are some smaller weather events that will take place over the coming days.

In other parts of the country, lake effect snow could slow travel around sections of the Great Lakes, but should not cause major problems. Therefore, I can't rule out that some of these snow showers could make it all the way to the coast. Don't be surprised if you see a few snowflakes in the air this morning.

One dark spot on the holiday forecast: Wednesday could be a wet travel day in New Jersey, but most of the rain should fall in the morning.

High pressure is going to remain in control for much of the next 10-day period with limited amounts of rainfall. We have plenty of sunshine in the forecast as temperatures vary from day to day, but overall ideal weather for any of your travel plans within the mid-west. The only chance for rain before the holiday will come in eastern parts of the state late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. Rain is also expected to move into southern Georgia and coastal SC on Thursday. This will push off the coast in the afternoon.

"If it does make it in here, it'll be for Wednesday morning, then the cold front will chase it on out for Wednesday afternoon", StormTeam 5 chief meteorologist Harvey Leonard said.

You can follow my updates here and on Twitter @growingwisdom. A few pieces of energy and a trough of low pressure will move through Florida and South Georgia between Tuesday and Thanksgiving.

Tuesday: Sunshine, breezy and milder. The good news for parade spectators: It should be dry and mostly sunny in Manhattan.
