Tesla factory is a 'hotbed for racist behavior': suit

Jim Chanos Adds To Tesla Short Thinks Musk Will Step Down By 2020

Tesla has been sued for gender discrimination, anti-LGBTQ harassment, unlawful firings, and ageism. When he complained to the human resources department, Vaughn says, he was sacked for "not having a positive attitude".

Vaughn also claimed that Tesla's workplace was a "hotbed for racist behavior", and follows another lawsuit alleging racially-driven harassment and discrimination filed against the automaker last month. Vaughn charges that workers and managers on the factory floor routinely used the n-word within his earshot.

"Although Tesla stands out as a groundbreaking company at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, its standard operating procedure at the Tesla factory is pre-Civil Rights era race discrimination", the lawsuit says.

Tesla has already battled lawsuits alleging the company discriminates against homosexual and elderly workers. Vaughn worked in the Fremont factory from April 23 to October 31.

Tesla has roughly 33,000 employees globally but has never publicly released its diversity statistics, Bloomberg reported. Over 10,000 employees work at its auto-assembly plant in Fremont, California.

The union and the employee rejected that he had been paid by UAW.

This is not the first lawsuit against the company.

The company did not respond to Business Insider's requests for comment on the lawsuit Vaughn filed.

The growing amount of discrimination claims against Tesla come as the company is also facing a unionization campaign from the United Auto Workers (UAW).

The lawsuit was filed in the California state court in Oakland on Monday (13 November) and is at least the third filed this year by black workers.

Jose Moran - who claimed to be an employee at the Fremont factory - wrote a scathing critique of the facility and his employer, alleging "excessive mandatory overtime" and low wages.

According to The Mercury News, a Tesla spokesperson, however, stated that, "given our size, we recognize that unfortunately at times there will be cases of harassment or discrimination in corners of the company".

Tesla has denied those claims as well. According to the early reports, Tesla's semi truck would clock between 200 and 300 miles, and it is intended for day trips.
