India and Singapore today signed an agreement to deepen cooperation in the maritime security domain and called for ensuring freedom of navigation in critical sea lanes against the backdrop of China's increasing military manoeuvres in the Indo-Pacific region.

India is getting set to provide to Singapore naval practice and logistics facilities, which will include live firing drills in the Andamans, to add to the ones already being provided to the army and air force of the city-state for the last 10 years.

Talking on India's Act East policy and the relations with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Ng said he would discuss the possibility of multilateral naval exercises, with his Indian counterpart, Nirmala Sitharaman, on Wednesday.

Asked if Singapore would allow operational turnaround to Indian Naval ships at their naval base, Ng said: "I would respond categorically - I would not just be comfortable, I would encourage the Indian Navy to visit Changi Naval Base more often".

He also said that Singapore wants more activities in both the Strait of Malacca and Andaman Sea.

India and Singapore continually committed to deal with transnational threats, in particular, the danger posed by worldwide terrorism, Sitharaman asserted. "This is the reason why our air force trains with your air force".

He said that technical people will see whether the country will buy the aircraft.

They agreed that to facilitate greater collaboration in aerospace, electronics and other areas of mutual interest between the defence industries of both countries.
