It's more like a way station or, for some, a halfway point. Although you might want to buy a few special ornaments or decorations for your house on Black Friday, plan ahead by purchasing next year's décor right after Christmas, when seasonal items are sold at clearance prices.
For example, Amazon began its countdown to Black Friday on November 1.
Online sales begin in the week leading up to Black Friday, which lands on November 24th this year, and continue through to Cyber Monday on November 27th. Sears and sister company Kmart also lowered the minimum purchase threshold for free shipping from $49 to $25.

"We have a tent as well as a heater", said early shopper Roslyn Lott.

Adobe predicts that online sales during the 2017 holiday shopping period will soar to $107.4 billion, with Cyber Monday being the biggest online shopping day ever.
That doesn't mean, however, that consumers won't be shopping on Turkey Day.
"They're doing just what they need to do", she said.
The Black Friday sales week has transitioned over the years from an in-store sales day to a week long event with purchases just as likely to be made online as in physical stores. Professional services firm Deloitte are forecasting a 4.5 percent increase in spending for 2017. "That compares to only 42 percent in-store".
Many national retailers started their holiday sales early.
The sales are pretty big. Herberger's stores will be open through 11 p.m. Friday with doorbusters available through 3 p.m. Friday for what Herberger's calls 28 hours of deals. And retailers large and small have filed for bankruptcy, including prominent names such as Toys R Us, Gymboree, Payless Shoes and RadioShack. This year, the opening will be 5 p.m. GameStop is opening for the first time on Thanksgiving. The shopping centers will open at 6 a.m. today. The toy store also opened at 5 p.m.
"The support that we received past year when we made this decision was overwhelmingly positive", Stephen Lebovitz, CBL's president and chief executive, said in a statement.
Black Friday has been a staple of holiday shopping for years, giving shoppers the chance to get great deals on a variety of items. Manufactured by Garmin, the Forerunner series have gone on sale for Black Friday.
"Retailers have been stocking up in expectation of this, and all signs are that this will be a busy holiday season", Shay said. The sales from now until Christmas will make up almost 30 percent of all shopping done this year.
