Russian Federation says U.S. providing cover for Islamic State in Syria

"These facts are conclusive evidence that the United States, while imitating an uncompromising fight against worldwide terrorism for the global community, in fact provides cover for Islamic State units", the defense ministry said.

The ministry also said that the US coalition categorically refused to strike the retreating terrorists in spite of repeated proposals by the Russian military to conduct joint actions.

"However, the Americans categorically refused to conduct airstrikes against the IS terrorists, saying that, according to their data, the fighters were "surrendering" and were protected by the Geneva convention on treatment of war prisoners", the Russian officials said.

Relying on their advanced jets, the Russian Air Force carried out dozens of airstrikes over the Albukamal region of Deir ez-Zor, inflicting heavy damage on the Islamic State's already battered defenses.

The Americans failed to answer the Russian side's question on why IS militants leaving in combat vehicles heavily equipped are regrouping in the area controlled by the global coalition to conduct new strikes over the Syrian army near Abu Kamal, the Russian Defense Ministry stressed. IS is a terrorist group banned in Russian Federation.

The Defense ministry's statements in English claimed that Russian drones filmed Islamic State convoys fleeing Syrian and Russian airstrikes along the Iraqi-Syrian border on November 9.

The United States is providing de-facto cover for Islamic State units in Syria and only pretending to fight terrorism in the Middle East, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

The Syrian government troops' offensive against the city of Abu Kamal has disrupted the U.S. plans to create pro-American authorities to govern the territories on the eastern bank of the Euphrates, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

"Such actions by the coalition show that the rapid advance of the Syrian troops in Abu Kamal have disrupted USA plans to create pro-American authorities beyond the control of the Syrian government, and to manage the territories on the eastern bank of the Euphrates", it said.

With the Islamic State's defenses deeply fractured, the Syrian Arab Army's Tiger Forces were able to make significant progress along the Mayadeen-Albukamal Road, liberating more than 30 km of territory from the militants on Sunday.
