Russian Federation loses contact with satellite hours after launch

Russia launches second rocket from new cosmodrome

"The hydrometeorological satellite "Meteor-M N. 2-1" was the main payload. "The Soyuz 2.1b rocket put the booster "Fregat" and space satellite 'Meteor-M" in the designated intermediate orbit", Roscosmos said.

Russian Federation has lost contact with a weather satellite just hours after its launch from a new cosmodrome. The first launch from Vostochny was carried out in April a year ago.

This isn't the first time, earlier first launch from Vostochny spaceport in far eastern Russian Federation took place in April 2016, with President Vladimir Putin overseeing the take-off.

The Meteor satellite would become the third such orbiting device created to make it possible to deliver weather situation reports to air carriers and forecast weather emergencies. But it failed to do so, according to Russian state news service Interfax, and the space agency has now lost contact with it.

The Meteor M2-1 was supposed to detach from the rocket carrying it this morning, soon after it launched.
