Fall River Police officers responded to a "disturbance call" at the intersection of Riggenbach and Airport Road shortly before 11:45 p.m. on Sunday.
The shooting is under investigation by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, Massachusetts State Police and Fall River Police. "During this encounter, the police officer fired shots into the vehicle, striking the operator", the statement read.
A person reported that there was "a auto smoking" and they heard what sounded like gunshots. The caller was unsure if it was a crash or a fight.

Details are emerging on both the officer-involved shooting and a series of arrests at the Charlton Memorial Hospital. That driver, later identified as 19-year-old Larry Ruiz-Barreto of New Bedford, was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
