Universal's Illumination Entertainment is nearing a deal with Nintendo to make an animated feature based on the popular Super Mario Bros. videogame, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The deal follows an agreement made by Universal and Nintendo two years ago, in which they have been granted permission to build a Mario Brothers theme park.
Neither Nintendo or Illumination Pictures commented on the Journal's report, but it's not that much of a stretch.
While its live-action status did afford us the chance to watch the great Bob Hoskins prance around the screen as Mario, the movie was plagued with weird departures from the elements of the Mario franchise we commonly associate with the beloved gaming series.

Let's face it, Illumination are one of the best animation houses out there at the moment, so they're more than ideal to bring a new Super Mario Brothers movie to the screen. The aforementioned Super Mario Bros., released in 1993, was a critical and commercial failure, although it did leave us with a truly magical cinematic moment.
Once upon a time, Nintendo made a decision to roll the dice on a big-budget Hollywood adaptation of Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Odyssey has certainly proved that Mario can survive the transition into some pretty weird universes.
