National Chairman: PDP Promises To Support Winner

The next substantive national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must now emerge through a ballot at the party's convention slated for December 9 after 11 governors elected on the party's platform failed to convince the candidates for the position to reach a consensus on who should occupy the seat.

Though the meeting which started at 5.30 p.m. and stretched till midnight had planned to possibly reduce the number of aspirants from eight to possibly two or three, it failed to achieve the objective.

"He has disorganised the South-West PDP for selfish manipulations with his cohorts, chief among who is the uncultured and erratic Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose", the statement read in part.

He also revealed that all the chairmanship aspirants were to sign a pact today at the party's national secretariat, in Abuja, ahead of the convention.

Fayose, while speaking at the end of the meeting on Monday, said the PDP governors had agreed to work with whoever emerged chairman at a free, fair, transparent and credible convention. "He had been going about not even as an elected national chairman with full tenure but much more ridiculously like a sole administrator with timeless tenure under the disguise of solving one problem or the other". "We are leaving Enugu believing that we will take power at the centre in 2019".

And we are using this opportunity to ask that the Anambra election must be credible.

Towards the forthcoming Anambra Governorship election holding on November 18, Fayose disclosed that "We equally believe that we have what it takes to take over Anambra".

The governors also met with party leaders and presidential aspirants such as Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Alhaji Sule Lamido and national caretaker committee chairman and secretary, Ahmed Makarfi and Ben Obi.

The meeting was well attended by the governors of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Abia, Ebonyi, and Ekiti states.

Others included former governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel, a former PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje and Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Other party leaders present at the meeting were former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara; Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio; former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam; former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, and former Minister of Aviation, Dr Kema Chikwe.
