Mother, toddler killed in crash with bear on Thanksgiving

Sarah Rohde and her daughter Arianna

Officials with the California Highway Patrol say Sarah Rohde was driving on Hwy 4 when a black bear stopped in front of her vehicle.

Sarah Rae Rohde, 27, of Copperopolis was going between 55 and 60 miles per hour westbound on State Route 4 in Vallecito about 6 p.m. Thursday when a black bear walked into the two-lane road in front of her auto, the CHP said.

The woman's 4-year-old daughter was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with minor injuries, FOX 40 reported.

Rohde had spent the day with her mother and sister and was heading home to Copperopolis, a small town about 40 miles east of Stockton. The couple had been together for eight years, going to school together, working together and living together. His loss is twofold. "I don't know if my life will ever be the same", he said, blinking back tears.

Investigators said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the accident. A GoFundMe page was set up to help cover funeral and other costs.
