Marvin Bagley III leads No 1 Duke past Texas

Marvin Bagley III Jamie Orme

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski calls Marvin Bagley III a treasure.

"I believe ultimately in this kid". "Because he wants to be really good".

The Blue Devils fell behind by 16 points with nearly 11 minutes to play in regulation, but fought back to send the game into overtime and then sealed the victory without Grayson Allen, who fouled out.

With the victory, Duke will face the victor of Friday night's game between Florida and Gonzaga on Sunday, while Texas will take on the loser on the same day.

Fellow big man Dylan Osetkowski, in his first season on the court for Texas after transferring in from Tulane, led Texas with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The five-time NCAA champion Blue Devils were coming off a 92-63 victory over Furman on Monday night, led by Bagley with 24 points. Andrew Jones' layup pulled Texas within 78-77 with 1:20 left.

"The game kind of slowed down and my teammates found me in the right spots".

Duke (7-0) scored the first five points of overtime and held on for an 85-78 win. "He just has to keep developing it". The Vikings stayed out in front until Gary Trent Jr. made a pair of free throws for Duke to tie it at 42 with 2:09 left in the half. After he sunk the free throw, Matt Coleman went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to tie the game with 19 seconds left.

Down by 13 with 7:37 to play, Duke staged a massive comeback over the next five minutes, tying the game at 70 on a jumper by Bagley. Seven years ago, it was a homecoming game for Kyle Singler, who scored 30 points when the Blue Devils defeated OR at what was then called the Rose Garden. Duke made just three of 18 3-point attempts for the game and finished with 22 of 36 free throws. Bamba did not have a major impact offensively, scoring nine points on 3-for-7 shooting from the field, but he did grab 10 rebounds, block two shots and change countless other shots around the basket. "You're gonna get tested when you play teams like Butler, they went to the Sweet 16 past year, they've got their top two players back and they've got a lot of other good guys".

"It's an opportunity for us to see what we're about, and see what we're made of", Texas coach Shaka Smart said Wednesday before practice.

They're participating in the PK80 Invitational, which honors the Nike icon's 80th birthday. The event takes a break on Saturday before resuming on Sunday.

Duke and Texas were in the Motion Bracket, playing Friday at the Moda Center, home of the Portland Trail Blazers.

It was the fifth meeting between the teams, and Duke has won all of them. His 34 points tie J.J. Redick's single-game record for most by a Duke freshman. The four-star recruit also considered Gonzaga.

Texas (3-0) faces Butler (3-1) in its Motion Bracket opener Thursday. The most recent meeting was on February 29, 2016, when the Longhorns lost 86-56 to No. 1 Kansas. The victor will likely face Duke - provided the Blue Devils get by Portland State (4-0). He averaged 17.3 points and 9.3 rebounds during a recent three-game stretch.

Portland State: The Vikings will face the Butler-Texas loser. Jones had 16 points while Bamba had six points and 12 rebounds along with four blocked shots.

Portland State will face top-ranked Duke on Thanksgiving Day, while the Portland Pilots open the tournament against defending NCAA Tournament champion North Carolina.
