Manchester United report 17.3 percent rise in first-quarter revenue

Rafa Benitez has warned that Newcastle will lose more games but is optimistic of survival

The club reported an operating profit of £15.2m and a major increase in broadcasting income.

Manchester United is second in the Premier League and poised to qualify for the Champions League knock-out phase.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: "We are just over a quarter of the way through what promises to be another exciting season".

Marcos Rojo has set a target of returning to first-team action for Manchester United's Champions League fixture with CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford next month. It is also in the last eight of the Carabao League Cup.

While its commercial income remained stable year-on-year - up 8.3% to £80.5m, its broadcast increased 30.9%, to £38.1m.

During the quarterly period, the club took part in a U.S. tour and also signed three new players - Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

These figures include an increase of £7.6m, some 12.2 per cent, in "employee benefit expenses", which the club said is "primarily due to player salary uplifts due to participation in the UEFA Champions League".

There was also a 30 per cent increase in broadcasting revenue compared to the same quarter a year ago, helped by a return to the Champions League for Jose Mourinho's side following their Europa League triumph last season.

United, which posted a 33.3% rise in matchday revenue after playing two additional home games in the period, stuck to its full-year forecast for revenues of £575-585m and adjusted EBITDA of £175-185m.
