Killer escapes mental hospital, flies to California

Before state reported him gone, 'violent' escapee had boarded flight to CA

A man police are calling a "highly unsafe psychopath" has escaped the Hawaii State Hospital and left the island of Oahu on a charter plane.

Maui police announced Tuesday that 59-year-old Randall Toshio Saito managed to escape Oahu's Hawaii State Hospital and catch a flight to Maui.

Police have determined that, shortly after escaping, Saito took a taxi from Kaneohe to Honolulu, where he chartered a plane to Maui. Multiple federal agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals, are executing a manhunt to locate him. Police are warning people not to approach Saito if they see him.

Saito is considered "extremely unsafe and should not be approached", the Honolulu Police Department said. A bench warrant has been issued for Saito's arrest in the amount of five hundred thousand dollars. "The State is in close contact with law enforcement to make this happen". He was acquitted by reason of insanity of the murder of Sandra Yamashiro, whom he shot and stabbed repeatedly at a Honolulu shopping mall. Her body was found in her auto at a Honolulu shopping mall, but she had been shot and repeatedly stabbed.

A court in 1993 denied Saito's request for conditional release, saying Saito still suffered from sexual sadism and necrophilia just as when he was committed to the hospital 12 years earlier, the Honolulu Advertiser reported.

Defense attorneys looked to have Saito released from the institution in 2000, but deputy city prosecutor Jeff Albert objected the motion.

Almost two decades later, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported that state prosecutors believed Saito to fit "all the criteria of a serial killer" and opposed his release.
