Passengers on a morning train on the Tokyo region's Tsukuba Express line might not have noticed anything was amiss Tuesday.

A Japanese rail company has apologised to commuters after one of its trains left the station- 20 seconds earlier than it was scheduled to depart.

A statement issued by Tsukuba Express later the same day said: "On November 14, at approximately 9:44 a.m., a northbound Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company (main office in Tokyo, Chiyoda Ward, President & CEO Koichi Yugi) train left Minami Nagareyama Station roughly 20 seconds earlier than the time indicated on the timetable. After that. I closed the door without checking the departure time sufficiently".

To make the whole thing even funnier, no customers had even complained about the early departure from Minami Nagareyama Station.

"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you by our customers", the statement read. It added that the train's crew has been spoken to and taught to prevent recurrences.

But the train instead left at 9:43:40, prompting an official apology on the company's website.

Some people on social media were flabbergasted the company apologized, with some even recalling their bad moments with different trains.

Trains in Japan are well-known for their punctuality.

The Tsukuba Express railway connects Akihabara and Tsukuba, two towns that are about 37 miles apart, a journey that takes about 45-minutes.

Trains in Japan are among the most reliable in the world, with the Tokkaido line alone ferrying some 150 million passengers every year.
