Indonesian terrorist charged with rebellion

MANILA- The Indonesian national, believed to be one of the remaining Maute Group stragglers who was arrested in Marawi City, was formally turned over to the Philippine National Police's (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Wednesday night.

Muhammad Ilham Syahputra, 22, underwent inquest proceedings before Assistant State Prosecutor Ethel Rea Suril at the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office on Thursday afternoon for rebellion and violations of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulatory Act (Republic Act 10591), Law on Explosives (Republic Act 9516) and International Humanitarian Law (Republic Act 9581).

Syahputra was arrested at 7 a.m. on Wednesday during the clearing operations in Barangay Luksa Datu in Marawi City, said Senior Supt.

The foreigner was brought to Manila on Thursday and is now in the custody of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) inside Camp Crame.

Authorities seized from Syahputra his mobile phone, passport, a fragmentation grenade, firearm and ammunition, cash in local and foreign dominations, gold bracelets, and computer tablet.

The same report also said that the suspected Indonesian fighter claimed to have been involved in the 2016 attacks in Thamrin, Central Jakarta. The PNP Custodial Center at Camp Crame is considered as a secured detention facility for suspected terrorists.

Hapilon was killed along with Omar Maute, their death started the end of the fighting in Marawi City which started on May 23 this year and led to the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

One of the killed terrorists was identified as Abu Talja, said to be the right-hand man of Isnilon Hapilon, the designated emir and leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group, who was earlier killed by government troops.
