Hypocritical De La Hoya calls out McGregor

Conor Mc Gregor Marc Goddard

Oscar De La Hoya has revealed he is training in secret - with a view to fighting Conor McGregor.

De La Hoya did say that if a fight could be made it would have to be in the ring as he had no intention of meeting McGregor in the cage, where he admitted "he would freaking destroy me".

"I'm faster than ever". Two rounds, that's all I need. "I'll come back for that fight", he said.

The UFC will be keen to, at least, be seen to take some action against the Irish fighter, though not appearing on a UFC 219 card will not go far enough for many observers of mixed martial arts. I'm calling him out.

"After the event, I had some executives from UFC contact me within two hours after what occurred". Much more than that though, McGregor is a personality who is hard to ignore and is admired within and without the world of UFC for his unrivalled passion, dedication and commitment.

There's no time frame for a return right now, or whether the UFC would be interested in another co-promotion with De La Hoya's "Golden Boy Promotions".

And before we write the bout off as an impossibility, let's all remember that everybody dismissed the initial talk of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor as absolutely ridiculous but then August came around and they actually met in the ring. That's all I'm going to say. "I don't know what it is, but I'll tell you now that I've never felt so good before in my life".

De La Hoya, who retired in 2009 after a one-sided defeat Manny Pacquiao, won 10 world titles in six different weight classes and is regarded as one of the finest boxers of his generation. You heard it on Golden Boy Radio.

In the lead up to the fight, De La Hoya had penned an open letter to boxing fans calling it a "circus" and a "farce" and warned that the sport "might not ever recover".

De La Hoya also apparently conceded that McGregor would "destroy" him in the cage, which, yes, is a given. In a bout that nearly surely would draw considerably less?
