House Republicans introduce resolution to boot Mueller from Russian Federation probe

At the time the Obama administration was considering the deal, the Federal Bureau of Investigation had evidence of Russian bribery and required a confidential informant to sign a non-disclosure agreement, Gaetz noted based on government documents.

Three House Republicans submitted a resolution Friday calling for Robert S. Mueller III to step down as special counsel of the investigation into ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Representatives Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs and Louis Gohmert accused Mueller of a conflict of interest because he was director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when former President Barack Obama's administration approved an agreement allowing a Russian company to buy a Canadian company that owned 20 percent of US uranium supplies.

Some conservatives have latched on to the Uranium One deal recently, pointing to a report tangentially tying the deal to the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, who was the secretary of state at the time, and her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Earlier this week, Mueller announced the first charges of his probe against three members of Trump's campaign: former campaign manager Paul Manafort, his business partner Rick Gates, and campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

Gaetz says the issue is that Mueller's FBI had found evidence of criminal activity that may have been relevant to the deal but did not bring any charges, and that Mueller therefore should recuse himself from the current investigation. "He must step down immediately", Gaetz said in a statement.

Moscow denies any effort to influence the election, and Trump has dismissed the investigation as a "witch hunt".

Meanwhile, another group of GOP lawmakers led by House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-MA) late last month launched an investigation into Obama administration officials, including Clinton, who sat on the committee that approved the uranium deal.

While these conservatives have called for Mueller's resignation, other (more prominent) Republicans have expressed support for the special counsel.

"Mueller is incapable of leading a focused, unbiased investigation", Biggs said in a press release Wednesday.
