Gujarat Election Commission banned Pappu word use in campaign

039;Seene me jalan aankhon me toofan sa kyun hai': Rahul Gandhi on Delhi smog

As the Gujarat elections are around the corner, both Bhartiya Janata Party and Congress are all set to finalise their candidates for the upcoming polls on Wednesday.

The Election Commission (EC) has put restrictions on the use of the term "Pappu" by BJP's electronic advertisement cell in Gujarat.

Recalling how Congress leader Indira Gandhi blocked Moraraji Desai's prospects of becoming Prime Minister in the past, Virendra Singh said no one could be a bigger foe of Gujarat than the Congress.

The BJP also sought to corner Rahul on the issue of reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) saying that the Congress had stalled the passage of the OBC Commission in an attempt to protect the quota of Muslim OBCs.

The same day, the election body raised objections and said the use of the word "Pappu" was derogatory for "a specific person who is commonly known by that name".

All political parties need to submit their script related to the election advertisement to the EC. And the EC has requested the BJP party to remove Pappu word from the campaign ad. "The BJP is fighting the election under Vijay Rupani and Nitin Patel", Shah said on Network18's Agenda Gujarat program.

"Since there was no direct mention or linkage with any person while mentioning "Pappu" in the entire script, we had appealed to the committee to reconsider their decision, but they rejected it", he said.

Gujarat will head into elections on December 9 and 14, and the results will be declared on December 18.
