Frank LoBiondo Latest GOP Congressman To Throw In Towel, Citing

"It is something I would like to do, but I want to look at it ... speak to friends, family, advisers".

LoBiondo, a Republican, represents a swing district that sprawls across South Jersey and the Shore, one that supported Barack Obama twice but also backed President Trump a year ago.

LoBiondo of New Jersey and Ted Poe of Texas, made their announcements within hours of each other and added their names to a growing list of Republicans bowing out before the midterm elections.

Poe saw his suburban Houston seat grow more Democratic in 2016. Thanks to the good Lord, I'm in good health, but it's time for the next step.

The decision by 12 term Republican Congressman Frank LoBiondo not to run for re-election next year is likely to shake up the political scene down the shore.

LoBiondo oversees two subcommittees in the lower chamber, including the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee's Aviation Subcommittee and the House Intelligence Committee's CIA subcommittee. "In legislating, we previously fought against allowing the flawless to become the enemy of the good". "Today a vocal and obstinate minority within both parties has hijacked good legislation in pursuit of no legislation".

Also mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate is retired state Superior Court Judge Raymond Batten, a former state Assembly member. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11), Leonard Lance (R-7) and Tom MacArthur (R-3). "New Jersey's second district deserves a true public servant's representation - not that of a career politician". LoBiondo's retirement caught some party leaders by surprise.

Mr. LoBiondo may face more of that obstinance in Congress as he and Donald Norcross (D-NJ-1) seek support for a review of PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act).

"I am sincerely humbled by the trust and responsibility the voters of New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District placed in me".

"Today I announce I will not seek reelection in 2018". On the republican side, it's an open issue for now.

Another popular Democrat who could jump into the race is Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester), although he would have to move into the district from nearby Paulsboro. But it's LoBiondo's South Jersey seat that Democrats have a better chance of winning. I have always been focused, committed and determined to represent the people of South Jersey with honor and respect.
