Henrik Stenson has withdrawn from the European Tour's season-ending DP World Tour Championship because of a nagging rib injury.
It will take one final big effort for the victor to emerge after a tough season, and then the players can put their feet up for a while: this is the last European Tour event of 2017, with just the co-sanctioned Hong Kong Open, Australian PGA Championship, Mauritius Open and Joburg Open to come.
Technically, only three players still have the ability to win the Race to Dubai, with Tommy Fleetwood now commanding the top position over Justin Rose and Masters Champion Sergio Garcia.
"Winning The Race to Dubai is great, but I'm not going to change my whole life for it", Garcia added.
Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick is in the field this week after he won this tournament a year ago with a birdie at the 72nd hole.
After almost 12 months of hard work and toil - and the occasional slice of top notch golf - the European Tour campaign boils down to its curtain-call event: the DP World Tour Championship from Dubai. Fitzpatrick claimed the biggest title of his career in dramatic fashion in Dubai a year ago. "This is a place I've done well even before my win here last year - I finished fourth in 2015 - so I love the course and all being well I'll have a similar sort of result and end the year on a high". A couple of the fairways are looking better than the last few years.
"Never in a million years would I have expected what I've done this year", said Rahm, who joins the likes of Nick Faldo, Jose Maria Olazabal, Sandy Lyle, Colin Montgomerie, Garcia and Martin Kaymer in claiming the accolade. It was designed by Greg Norman, who has identified European parkland courses as his inspiration, which is perhaps why the elite-level players have taken to the layout very nicely.
"I don't know how I'll feel this week". It doesn't really bother me.
Garcia's Masters victory is one of his three wins on the 2016-17 European Tour schedule against two each for Fleetwood and Rose.
"I can't control what other people do". "I'm going to give everything I have, play the best I can, give myself the best opportunity of winning and see where I end up".
Justin Rose is the closest challenger to Tommy Fleetwood this week.
"To be totally honest, I see a two per cent chance of me winning the Race to Dubai". I can live with it. It's going to be a new experience, it's going to be a great experience.
