Azerbaijan Airlines has announced its decision to order additional five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners from Boeing, along with two large freighters valued at about $1.9 billion.
However, the order for the jets whose production helps support thousands of jobs at Airbus's United Kingdom plants has so failed to materialise.
Signing this agreement, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the world-renowned airline, S. Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, did so in the presence of the current Vice President and UAE Prime Minister and also the Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. However, there are huge doubts whether airlines who have ordered A380s will actually buy them.
Ethiopian Airlines now operates a fleet of six Boeing 777 freighters and two Boeing 757 freighters, operating to 39 cargo destinations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
The United Arab Emirates-based carrier will also become the first to receive the new Boeing 777X in 2020.
The order should see the aircraft delivered in 2018 and 2019.
In total, Boeing has sold more than 1,275 Dreamliners to more than 65 customers so far; The deal with Emirates pushes the total number of new 787 orders this year to more than 180.
"It has always been Emirates' strategy to invest in the most advanced and efficient aircraft, and today's orders reflect that", Al Maktoum continued. Aircraft deliveries will begin 2022.
"We appreciate Azerbaijan Airlines' growing confidence in the Boeing 787 and the airplane's market-leading fuel efficiency and passenger-pleasing features", said Kevin McAllister, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Industry sources have said they expect a commercial launch from Boeing of the new mid-sized jet next year.
