Envelope containing white powder see MSPs and staff evacuated from Scottish Parliament

Police confirm they are dealing with an incident at Holyrood after a package believed to contain white powder was sent to the area of parliament where the MSP have their offices.

Police are at the scene after receiving a call at 11.35am this morning and an investigation is ongoing.

"No other areas of the Holyrood campus are now affected and the Parliament remains open to the public at present".

Tory MSPs Liz Smith, Jamie Halcro-Johnston, Edward Mountain were each sent suspect envelopes to their offices, according to the BBC.

White powder was found to be contained within the envelope.

A source said: "Parliament security were alerted and came running, followed by the police".

THREE envelopes containing white powder has sparked an evacuation from the Scottish Parliament building.

"The MSP block was evacuated as a precaution but enquiries have concluded there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident and no crime has been committed".

"The Parliament's Incident Management Team has been activated".

"The Presiding Officer and members of the Parliamentary Bureau have been briefed on the situation and are meeting now".

In response to the evacuation, the parliament issued a statement on Twitter that "The MSP building has been evacuated as a precaution following the discovery of suspicious packages.Chamber business will go ahead as planned this afternoon".

"This is part of a pre-arranged process put in place, ready to deal with such developing situations". They then evacuated the building and were examining the contents of the packages.
