Elizabeth Warren Walks Back DNC Criticism, Says Primary Process Was 'Fair'

In this January 2017 file photo, former Sen. In an agreement with the Clinton campaign manager and Schultz, donations made to the victory fund were to be sent to Hillary for America headquarters in Brooklyn, a result of how Clinton and her campaign essentially kept the party from collapsing and imploding on itself.

In an excerpt published prior to the book's release, Brazile described a joint fundraising agreement between Clinton's campaign, the Clinton joint fundraising committee, and the DNC that said the campaign would "control the party's finances, strategy, and all the money raised". What I said in the book was that in exchange for bailing out the party, which was broke, the Clinton campaign would get control over certain decisions and aspects of the DNC that made it hard, if not impossible for me to do my job. Brazile claims she broke the news to Sanders personally, over the phone, after lighting a candle and turning on some gospel music to center herself for "an emotional phone call". Leverage, for instance, to be nominated over Sanders.

Brazile, who headed the DNC after hacked emails showed staffers openly supporting Clinton in the primary, offers insight into the strategic deal, which she says allowed the campaign to "get control over certain decisions and aspects of the DNC". Brazile, however, began to backtrack on her own statements to clarify that she did not use the word rigged or find evidence of biased behavior of the DNC toward Clinton.

Many Democrats, including US Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., say this proves the primary election was "rigged" for Clinton. Listing all the many concerns of millions of voters who have been loyalists of either party would require a book.

Among those voters is Adriana Kille, a DePaul alum who studied economics and graduated in June 2016. Kille voted for Sanders in the primaries and for Clinton in the general elections.

"I'm pissed that Hillary basically had the primary election rigged against Bernie", Kille said.

To say the Clinton camp is furious at what they regard as betrayal doesn't do justice to their outrage.

Another young voter is DePaul College Democrats' president Mikaela Ziegler who also sees how important money plays into politics. It's now even more apparent how responsible Clinton and her team were for the fall of the Democrats in 2016, and how that ultimately led to President Donald Trump sitting in the Oval Office, which should upset anyone who isn't exactly his biggest fan.

Ziegler, like Kille, voted for Sanders in the primaries and then defaulted to Clinton.

The long-time Democratic strategist spoke with NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro about the book, which has stirred a new round of recrimination about what went wrong within the DNC and the Clinton campaign up to the election. I think the Democratic party has to have a strong message.

Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Donna Brazile takes the stage during the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphiam Tuesday, July 26, 2016.

The conduct in question is the comparison of the Clinton campaign and DNC's funding of research into potential collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential elections and the guilty plea by Trump's former foreign policy adviser and DePaul alum George Papadopoulos of eliciting Russian Federation for damaging information on Clinton. Both represent common-enough practices, that of opposition research, but one important factor divides them, according to Cook.

"I hope I contribute to the healing of our party". In the meantime, Democratic voters are looking forward.

"If we can fight to keep this on a level playing field", she said, "we can win".

When asked by a University of Chicago student if she would still be criticizing Clinton's campaign if she had won, Brazile flatly replied, "Yes" without offering further explanation. "The candidate matters way more than the party's institution".
