The biggest story of this past weekend happened on Sunday when we found out on Sunday that Chris Jericho is going to face NJPW's US Champion Kenny Omega at WrestleMania Kingdom 12 on January 4, 2018. He noted that Jericho got the idea from watching the buildup to the huge Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight.
Chris Jericho's idea of a match no one thought they'd ever see led him to Kenny Omega. As many of you know, Callis now does the English commentary for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) on the New Japan World website. After Callis approached Omega with the idea, both men then put it through head NJPW booker, Gedo.
They had meetings in NY where they negotiated for several weeks until they agreed to terms. The negotiations took place over the course of several weeks before a deal was eventually agreed upon.
Jericho issued the challenge Sunday at NJPW's Power Struggle pay-per-view event through a video where the wrestling icon called out Omega who is now NJPW's United States Champion. Since Jericho has only wrestled in WWE in 1999 and Omega is happy in New Japan, so it was possible that this match would never happen. According to sources, WWE didn't find out about the match until the Jericho promo aired on NJPW's Power Struggle event past Saturday. Jericho wrapped up his most recent WWE run a few months ago, and he's now a free agent.
