Curtis Samuel to undergo season-ending ankle surgery

The Panthers will be looking for a new starting wide receiver heading into the bye week.

Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver Curtis Samuel is out for the season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Samuel will undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle and consequently be placed on injured reserve, the team announced on Tuesday.

Head coach Ron Rivera said things weren't very optimistic about Samuel's ankle before an MRI Tuesday afternoon.

Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said the team would use a committee approach to replace Samuel.

The collective effort includes Kaelin Clay, Russell Sheppard and Damiere Byrd when he comes off injured reserve. Shula said of Samuel.

Monday night was a costly win for the Panthers. ". We're going to try hard to find ways to put guys in what they do best and then have them go do it".

Samuel was a big part of Carolina's plan coming into the season as the slot receiver because of his speed and playmaking ability.

He finished his rookie season with 15 receptions for 115 yards, and four rushes for 64 yards.

As a junior at Ohio State in 2016, Samuel was used as the Buckeyes' H-Back. "Every play we've got guys going in and out, and we hardly missed a beat as far as guys going to different positions from one play to another".
