Croatia, Switzerland qualify for World Cup

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill is expected to be a man in demand

West Brom defender Jonny Evans is backing Northern Ireland coach Michael O'Neill for the Scotland job.

The lure of replacing Strachan and returning Scotland to a major European competition could also prove tempting but there are concerns that O'Neill's rising reputation may have put him out of their price range.

I can't say I have any great love of "the handsome game" of football. They have given everything.

"But we know on the other side, management is such a hard job and if something came up, where it would be hard to turn down, no-one would ever begrudge him that".

The Northern Ireland boss has remained tight-lipped on his future following the country's World Cup qualifying failure.

Yet they could not rectify what happened at Windsor Park, when referee Ovidiu Hategan inexplicably gave that crucial first-leg penalty for a handball against Corry Evans that left O'Neill and his players dumbfounded. The SFA want to include Austin MacPhee, the Northern Ireland assistant, on the backroom team if they appoint O'Neill.

"I will think about the penalty decision for years to come as it's the only goal between the two sides and it's knocked us out".

"We were angered, upset and disappointed with what happened in Belfast".

"Ultimately we've gone out to a poor decision in the first leg", he told Sky Sports after the second-leg 0-0 stalemate.

Greece continued to enjoy more of the ball in the second period but when it came to finishing off an attack, either a pass would go astray or a defender would step in.A shot on the turn by Mitroglou from just outside the penalty area just missed the post with an outstretched Subasic unable to reach it. We were the better team."We had to ride our luck at times but we were pushing until the 94th minute". There were some players in tears, everyone was struggling to hold back their emotions. "For some of these players, it's unlikely that the World Cup will come around for them". "What we got from every single one was more than I could ask for".
