Call for knitters to make hats for babies for American Heart Month

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association is seeking volunteers to help knit or crochet red hats for babies born during the month of February. The hats are distributed to babies with and without heart defects.

Participating hospitals include Hilton Head Hospital and Coastal Carolina in Beaufort County, along with others around SC and the nation.

The project, called Little Hats, Big Hearts, has been created to honour and celebrate babies, mothers and living heart-healthily.

They're hoping to give out thousands of red hats to babies to raise awareness about heart health and congenital heart defects.

The American Heart Association website has information on who to contact in participating states. They also recommend simple hat patterns and caution against bows and buttons that can come off the hats, posing a danger for the little ones. Donations of yarn are also accepted.

"Thank you for making this program so special and for helping to spread awareness of heart disease and congenital heart defects", the organisers say.

"Little Hats, Big Hearts" started in February 2014 in Chicago, collecting 300 hats in the first year.
