Brown promises legal action on Trillian 'liars'

Lynne Brown reports to Guptas, says Eskom GM

"If truth be told, Eskom officials intentionally misled me on the Trillian matter and the acting chairperson (Zethembe Khoza) has assured me that those responsible will be charged by the company", said Brown.

Qoma was testifying earlier in the day before the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises during Parliament's inquiry into state capture at Eskom.

He said Khoza had told him the Guptas influenced the hiring and firing processes at the energy parastatal - they had stopped former Eskom chairperson Ben Ngubane from suspending Koko as chief executive.

On Tuesday, Qoma claimed Khoza told him that Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown was captured and therefore reported to the Gupta brothers.

Brown said Parliament must give them an opportunity to respond. "In this instance it's Minister Brown". He added that both Singh and Koko had a history of reporting to the Guptas. She said Parliament must "level the playing fields" by giving all sides the platform to respond to the allegations. The minister needs to sit here and account because this mess would not have been possible if she was capable.

He had sharply critisiced Brown, branding her a "liar" who was "totally incompetent".

Brown's statement came after Eskom spokesperson Khulani Qoma accused her of lying.

He said Brown had lied about her relationship with Trillian, formerly owned by Gupta lieutenant Salim Essa, because she had been embarrassed by media reports.

Qoma wanted to know‚ too‚ why the Eskom board had tried so hard to keep suspended financial director Anoj Singh in his job‚ after he had been suspended.

Qoma described the debacle in which Eskom allowed disgraced Molefe to retire on a full pension of R30 million at the age of 50 after he was implicated in state capture by former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela as a "well-orchestrated Ponzi scheme".

However Singh vehemently objected and insisted that only a redacted version be made available and only through successful application under the Promotion of Access to Information Act.
