Engineering and construction contractor Civmec on Friday said it would collaborate with Australian ship building firm Austal in the A$4 billion offshore patrol vessel program.
Western Australian ship builder Austal is expected to be named the builder for 10 of the 12 vessels at its Henderson shipyard from 2020, while the first two are expected to be manufactured in South Australia from next year by the government-owned shipbuilder ASC.
The OPV program will see 12 vessels built in total, with the first two being constructed in Adelaide by ASC.
"The announcement is the next stage in Australia's National Shipbuilding Plan and will directly employ up to 1000 Australian workers - 400 direct and a further 600 in the supply chain, " the Federal Government said in a press release.
"The project will then transfer to the Henderson Maritime Precinct in WA where Lürssen will use the capabilities of Austal and Civmec to build ten OPVs, subject to the conclusion of commercial negotiations".

Austal CEO David Singleton said the Australian Government has made a commitment to a continuous naval shipbuilding industry and Austal looks forward to playing a role in making this happen.
"We thank the Australian Government for this endorsement of our shipbuilding capability, which will ensure Austal's ongoing naval shipbuilding presence for the next decade and beyond".
