The investigators said that the shooting started a one location then moved to near Tehama Elementary School.
Three people died in a Tuesday morning shooting that took place near an elementary school in Tehama County, which is located near Chico, California, sheriff's officials said.
"Multiple students" have been airlifted from the scene according to Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston.
Law enforcement says the shooter was shot and killed by police. A helicopter medical crew reported they were transporting a 6-year-old victim with two gunshot wounds to Mercy Medical Center. Police said there were "at least five" shooting scenes.
A second child also was reported to have been shot in the right leg, according to emergency dispatch reports.
All other students had been evacuated from the school, authorities said.
