2018 iPad Coming With Face ID, No Home Button Or OLED Screen

If Apple manages to shrink the bezel of the new iPads without changing the screen size, this could make the overall form factor (and possibly weight) reduced compared to the current models. The updated tablet is expected to be released later next year, a little more than a year after the last major iPad Pro upgrade, the people said.

Sources told the news outlet the device will include the Face ID, Animoji and will allows users to make payments, suggesting the upcoming iPad could sport the TrueDepth camera found on the 10th anniversary iPhone.

Now to be clear, the workaround pre-dates iOS 11 and is actually designed as an accessibility feature to be used by people who have trouble using a physical home button.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The iPad had been Apple's second-largest product line as recently as 2015.

Other details about the next-generation iPad remain a mystery.

Apple reported during its earnings call last week that iPad revenue rose 14% to $4.8 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter, with an 11% increase in the number of units sold. Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus this year.

One key iPhone X enhancement that is unlikely to make its way to iPads next year is an OLED - or organic light-emitting diode - screen, according to people familiar with Apple's supply chain. OLED screens more accurately reproduce colors, but are more hard to produce in mass quantities than standard liquid-crystal displays.

Apple is unlikely to use OLED for the 2018 iPad lineup and will stick with LCD, according to the report. The 12.9-inch tablet was released alongside the $99 Apple Pencil.

Speaking of Apple Pencil, Bloomberg says a new version of Apple's digital stylus is in the works which would mark the first change to that hardware since it was introduced alongside the original iPad Pro.

One feature of the iPhone X that won't apparently be making its way to the new iPad would be an OLED display.

A new report by Bloomberg is claiming that Apple is working on a redesigned, high-end iPad, with facial recognition capabilities like the iPhone X, for release as early as 2018.
