World Cup victor Andrea Pirlo to retire in December

Pirlo here in action against England back in 2014 won 116 caps and scored 13 goals for Italy

Italy legend Andrea Pirlo has revealed that he will retire at the end of the season once his New York City FC contract expires in December.

"You realise that the time has come", Pirlo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. Each day, you have physical problems and you can't train as you would like to because there's always some niggle.

"At my age, that's enough".

The former AC Milan and Juventus star, 38, has called time on a glittering career after a two-year stint in the MLS with New York City FC. You don't have to carry on until you are 50. "I'll do something else." added Pirlo. Assistant of [Antonio] Conte?

"At 38, it's just right to give young players room". "I do not know yet, I'll be back in Italy already in December, Conte's deputy, they say things, I have ideas, but give me time to decide". That spark within you needs to ignite, and it's not ignited within me yet. It depends on the opportunities you are given. Like I say, I don't have that intention right now.

In Turin, he was sensational, playing some of the best football of his career in a four-year spell that saw the Bianconeri dominate Italian football, winning the Scudetto on four successive occasions. "To keep fit I will play golf and tennis". He also played an integral role, as Italy won the 2006 World Cup.

The 38-year-old will retire at the end of the current MLS season, and in doing so will bring the curtain down on a stellar playing career that has seen him win numerous game's top competitions.
