Trump tax cuts gain momentum as Rand Paul goes 'all in'

But Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee who has been courted by Republicans including President Donald Trump to be an ally on tax reform, said she voted against the resolution because it "would gut Medicare and Medicaid by nearly $470 billion and $1 trillion respectively, and make deep cuts to critical programs North Dakotans depend on to obtain affordable housing, heat for their homes, early education, Pell Grants, and more".

What's the goal for tax reform?

Another Trump foe, Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), agreed with Corker and said: "At the end of the day, we all know that the Senate budget resolution will not impact final appropriations". "We got ZERO Democrat votes with only Rand Paul (he will vote for Tax Cuts) voting against", he said. His biggest tax cut in history will put $4,000 to $9,000 in the pockets of average families, spur massive economic growth and lead to a balanced budget within eight years.

The first means cutting the number of tax brackets from seven to three and eliminating most itemized deductions.

The budget is a critical piece of the tax reform puzzle because it provides both a revenue line and a reconciliation mandate for the tax reform package. Even so, the outspoken Trump critic said he voted for the measure because, "the only thing about this that matters is in preparation for tax reform".

Representatives for Paul could not be immediately reached for comment on whether he would support the tax legislation, which Republicans are still hammering out after releasing an initial outline.

In a very good sign for those hoping the government will pass a tax overhaul package, yesterday the Senate approved a new budget that is expected to pave the way for a tax overhaul.

Trump's tax reform would overhaul the USA tax code, cutting rates for individuals and corporations while clearing away trillions of dollars' worth of deductions and special-interest tax breaks.

For Trump, tax reform is the last big chance at a major legislative victory in a year that has been filled with frustrations, whether by unanimous Democratic opposition, party feuds or GOP defections. "Medicare spending increases every year", Enzi said earlier this month. Republicans recognize that their serial failures to accomplish anything of substance (besides the confirmation of a Supreme Court justice) during a period when they control the White House and both chambers of Congress is a recipe for electoral disaster in next year's midterm elections.

For Congress, a loss on tax reform would mark another devastating blow at passing what is thought to be an agenda item with near-total GOP support.
