Trump 'made me cry,' says widow of slain USA soldier

Democrat representative Frederica Wilson at Mr Johnson's funeral

The widow of one of four soldiers killed in Niger went on television Monday to criticize President Donald Trump for how he spoke to her during a condolence call last week, saying the president blundered through the conversation and only deepened her grief because he did not seem to know her husband's name.

Johnson confirmed Wilson's account on Monday, saying the congresswoman was a longtime friend who was with the family in the vehicle when Trump called and listened on speakerphone.

Myeshia Johnson told George Stephanopoulos that she was "very angry" about the call and that Trump struggled to remember her husband's name.

She said she didn't like Trump's tone and that she broke down when Trump fumbled her husband's name.

She said he then had her husband's name on a report in front of him.

"If my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country, why can't you remember his name?" she said. "He was an awesome soldier". "What she said was 100 per cent correct".

Trump tweeted a response to Johnson's television appearance on Monday to refute her account that he did not know her husband's name.

Sgt. Johnson was found almost a mile away from the central scene of the ambush in Niger, four administration officials familiar with the early assessment of what happened told CNN on Friday.

Trump and the White House have gone after Rep. Wilson's character for several days. Trump called Wilson "wacky" and accused her of "secretly" listening to the phone call, sparking a he-said-she-said political dispute until Myeshia confirmed Wilson's story.

"Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated", Myeshia Johnson told "Good Morning America". La David Johnson was in a mentoring program for black youth in Miami that Wilson started.

"I didn't say what that congresswoman said; didn't say it all". When asked if she wanted to say anything to Trump, the young widow decided against delivering a message. To be at all familiar with Trump's record is to instinctively suspect the truth is the opposite of what he says it is.

Johnson said she has received little information from the military about how her husband died.

The email exchange, which has not been previously reported, shows that senior White House aides were aware on the day the president made the statement that it was not accurate - but that they should try to make it accurate as soon as possible, given the gathering controversy. "I don't know what's in that box". It could be empty for all I know. "No", she said. "I don't have nothing to say to him".

Myeshia Johnson, who is pregnant and due in January, said she wants the world, and her baby, to know La David Johnson was a "loving and caring" father and husband and a "great" soldier.
