'Thor: Ragnarok' Director Taika Waititi Wouldn't Whitewash 'Akira'

Taika Waititi'Thor Ragnarok' film premiere Arrivals Los Angeles USA- 10 Oct 2017

In an interview with IGN, Waititi confirmed the negotiations along with his love for the books, although he spoke of the project in both past tense and present tense, not revealing whether he's been signed to direct. Don't expect him to make the same mistake, should he get the gig. "I would do an adaptation of the books", Waititi said.

"I would not do a remake of the movie".

Back in 2011, several white actors - including Kristen Stewart, Dane DeHaan, and Garrett Hedlund - had been attached to star in an incarnation of a live-action Akira movie that eventually fell apart.

Sitting down with the late night talk show host to discuss his third and final Thor solo, Hemsworth got a few good minutes talking about what it was like working with Ragnarok co-star Mark Ruffalo and director Taika Waititi when Kimmel chose to shift the camera backstage to talk with the Hulk star. "I would do an adaptation of the books". I would do an adaptation of the books...

There has been a lot of talk over the years about a live action adaptation of the much beloved Japanese property Akira. To make things even worse, the Ghost in the Shell remake included a scene where Johansson's character, a cyborg with a human brain, learns that in her past life she was, in fact, a Japanese woman. Ragnarok, meanwhile, hits theaters on November 3rd. Time will tell if the project moves forward this time, but given the fate of previous attempts at Akira, it's best not to get any hopes up just yet. Back in 2011, a live-action Akira nearly got off the ground with Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) behind the camera, Kristen Stewart was offered a lead role in the film, and names like Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman and Garrett Hedlund were also floated as possible cast members. "There was, I mean, I was in talks to do that, for sure, and something that I was very passionate about-am passionate about". "Yes, I want to probably bring me closer a little more of the manga".

We won't spoil any of the jokes but Waititi and Hemsworth absolutely nail it.
