Everyone's favorite digital pet is making a comeback in in 2017!
Before Neopets and Nintendogs, Tamagotchis were the original virtual pets that taught children everywhere about mortality and the consequences of their own inactions. It's now celebrating its 20th anniversary with a miniature version.
Like the original, the mini Tamagotchi includes six different shell designs from the initial Japanese launch and each one includes six characters.
Awakening and evoking nostalgic feelings from the mid-to-late '90s, this smaller Tamagotchi device features the familiar egg shape, pixelated LCD charm, and, of course, the recurrent need for tender-loving-care that endeared fans in 1997 when it was first released! "So we wanted to make sure you could have that core play without feeling overwhelmed", Bandai America Marketing Director Tara Badie said to IGN while showing off the device at New York Comic Con.
The company responsible for blessing us with such sweet nostalgia, Bandai America, actually rereleased Tamagotchi in Japan earlier this year.
And, Bandai is hoping it can also appeal to the younger generation of gamers who have grown up with more advanced devices. "One, it's that basic human emotion of nurturing".
If you miss taking care of a little pocket pet - or if you miss neglecting it until it annoyed you into submission - you're in luck. It goes right to your heart. "It really broke through, in 1997, because it was a small portable game device that nobody had ever seen before".
