In the future, the noise of vehicle engines revving around the streets of Paris might become just a memory.
The controversial move announced Thursday follows Mayor Anne Hidalgo's plan to ban all diesel cars from the city by 2024, when Paris will host the Summer Olympics.
Paris will eradicate gas- and diesel-powered vehicles from the city by 2030, reports Reuters.
Paris City Hall, already under attack over the establishment of no-car zones, car-free days and fines for drivers who enter the city in cars that are more than 20 years old, said it was not using the word "ban" but rather introducing a feasible deadline by which combustion-engine cars would be phased out. Her detractors have accused her of waging a war against cars.
"We want to have zero diesel cars circulating in Paris for 2024 and zero gasoline cars for 2030", a spokesperson from the municipality of Paris told Interfax Natural Gas Daily.
Hidalgo has been seeking to reduce pollution with a series of measures. A year later, the body measuring air pollution said the move had no significant impact on residents' exposure to carbon emissions across the whole city. In July, it announced plans to have only electric or hybrid vehicles on sale after 2040.
Paris City Hall said in a statement France had already set a target date of 2040 for an end to cars dependent on fossil fuels and that this required speedier phase-outs in large cities.
Less than two weeks after Paris celebrated its third annual Day Without Cars, its mayor has decreed that the schedule for moving out fossil-fuel powered cars is moving up.
Crackdown on staff discounts a nightmare for employers
The controversial update to the CRA documents first appeared in a tax folio and was later added to the agency's employer's guide. If it's not available to the public, it's a benefit, and the CRA says that should be stated on employees' tax filings.
