A police officer was shot and killed by a suspect in New Orleans early Friday morning, officials have confirmed.
Several officers returned fire and the suspect was hit and brought to a hospital and arrested, authorities said.
The fallen officer, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to an area hospital where he passed away, Harrison told reporters outside the hospital.
The shooting took place near an apartment complex about 12:14 a.m., said Superintendent Michael Harrison.
"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison said.
According to FOX 8 in New Orleans, the officer was shot in a shootout in the eastern part of the city. The identities of the officer and suspect have not been released.
Paramedics took the officer to University Medical Center, and he died there, Harrison said. Harrison didn't describe where that apartment was, but a large number of law enforcement officers gathered near the Cypress Parc Apartments in the 6800 block of Cindy Drive in the wake of the shooting.
Harrison said two officers might have fired on the gunman. He was being treated at a local hospital early Friday.
