Iran says it has imposed limits on ballistic missile programme

The decision limits the reach of the weapons to only regional Middle Eastern targets.

"Our missiles have a 2,000-kilometer range, based on a limit prescribed by the commander in chief (Khamenei)".

Bagheri's remarks appear to be an attempt to show that Iran's missile program is a defensive one, in contrast to countries such as North Korea.

The remarks come as Iran's nuclear deal with world powers is threatened by USA president Donald Trump's refusal to re-certify the accord.

The IRGC commander also pointed to Washington's never-ending hostilities toward Tehran and said the Iranian people who have witnessed the hostilities for decades will never accept to adjust their military and defense capabilities and equipment according to the USA government's desire.

"Iranian missiles will also become more precise", he vowed. "Iran is capable of increasing missiles' range, however, the current range suffices for us because USA forces are within this 2000 kilometers and we can respond to them", Jafari told reporters on the sidelines of a conference titled "A World Without Terror".

"Therefore, they won't start a war".

"They know that if they begin a war between Iran and the United States, they will definitely be the main losers and their victory will by no means be guaranteed", he said.

While keeping with the anti-American tone common in his speeches, Gen Jafari's comments seemed to be timed to calm tension over Iran's missile programme.
