Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) said they had managed to moor three vessels that had been grounded during the storm.

The operation involved eight tugboats and lasted almost three hours.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial officials confirmed that at least eight people had died as a result of the storm with further reports of missing people.

A container ship blocks the harbour entrance in Durban, South Africa after high winds caused havoc. Five tugs successfully towed the 9,115-TEU, 348.5 metre vessel to safety. "Our immediate focus is to continue with the implementation of the recovery operations".

'I would like to thank all the Port of Richards Bay employees who entered our employee competition and put forward suggestions of names for this special vessel, ' said Port Manager Preston Khomo at the launch of the new tug earlier this year. TNPA's Dredging Services division, Subtech - a private marine service company - and drones conducted sounding surveys to highlight any unsafe build-up or obstruction on the seabed that could pose a risk to navigation. Engineering teams aided by aerial drones were conducting physical assessments of affected port buildings and infrastructure to assist in quantifying the damage.

'Ukhozi is one of nine new tugs being built for TNPA, but the first of two that will serve at our port alongside some of our older marine vessels. "At this stageā€š Durban marine operations are anticipated to resume by midday on Thursday, pending the outcome of the sounding surveys".
