Facebook unveils 'Oculus Go' standalone VR headset, price starts $199

Facebook unveils 'Oculus Go' standalone VR headset, price starts $199

"Oculus Go" has cameras on the headset and uses computer vision tech to figure out orientational tracking.

It's still unclear that what Vive Eclipse and Vive Focus really are.

The new product is meant to be more practical and accessible than Facebook's current flagship VR device, Oculus Rift, which requires a paired computer system to work - limiting its use to the home and to those who can afford a PC with the specifications needed to run virtual reality applications.

The headset can be modified according to required adjustments.

Perhaps nothing but this announcement made clear how big Facebook's ambitions are with VR. "The problem is you will be spending that money on a device that only does VR and nothing else". It also includes built-in speakers that provide spatial audio, along with a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. This means it should be able to run all existing Gear VR apps and games without modification, and since those are all created to run on an Android-powered Galaxy phone, it seems very likely that the Go runs some form of Android.

The Gear competes against other headsets, such as Google's $99 Daydream View, that require a smartphone. But, not so surprisingly ardent fans should keep their excitement under control as nothing is revealed with regards to the specifications of the device.

Mr. Zuckerberg promised the Oculus Go will be "the most accessible VR experience ever", and help realize his new goal of having 1 billion people dwelling in virtual reality at some point in the future. Last year, approximately 6.3 million customers bought VR devices of Samsung Electronics, Oculus, Sony, HTC, Google and so on.

Taking VR to offices and providing an alternative platform where businesses and companies can replace video conferencing with virtual reality headset is Facebook's dream.

Facebook has shaken up Oculus management team since then in a series of moves that included the departure of founder Palmer Luckey earlier this year. The latest prototype is sleeker and features fully tracked controllers to enable hand presence in standalone form factor.

With such demos, the company aims to detail how VR could be used in the fields of education, travel, healthcare and real estate, notes TechRadar.

Upgrades for Oculus Avatars was also introduced in the conference.

The conference also became a witness of the launch of Oculus for Business, which is a professional Rift bundle for businesses.
