Cross Timbers promoting Domestic Violence Awareness Month

"On average, almost 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States".

Did you know that one in four women and one in seven men will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime?

Three Halifax County natives have lost their lives to domestic violence since December, including Tearron Clayborn Medley on Dec. 9, Wendy Perkins on January 18 and Quanta Nashall Chandler on March 10.

Domestic violence does occur in our community.

In the simplest terms, domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.

The organizations offers crisis intervention with trained staff members who listen and help victims with safety planning and advocates that are trained to help with safety, empowerment, education and access to resources.

The Crime Victims Assistance Center is located in Binghamton and provides free counseling to survivors as well as a 24-hour crisis line and advocacy program.

She told the gathering "the scars you don't see are the most visible".

For many people who have survived domestic violence or a sexual assault, the hardest part is finding a safe place to process what had happened and be able to talk to someone, which is exactly what Cross Timbers Family Services is there for.

For the month of October, New Hope is having a photo contest where they are asking your group or company to all dress up in purple for domestic violence awareness, take a group photo and text it to 509-707-3945. The $25,000 grant will go to civil and criminal legal services to domestic violence victims along with education for the community.

"We're a 24-hour operation and we meet a lot of these clients right in the emergency room", said Raini Baudendistel, Crime Victims Assistance Center Executive Director.
