You could soon need Aadhaar for driving licence, registration of new vehicles
Weeks after the apex court ruled that privacy is a fundamental right guaranteed by the constitution while hearing a batch of petitions in the Aadhaar case, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the biometric identity number is a digital identity, not a physical identity.
"We are planning to link driving licence to Aadhaar". The process varies from state to state, but broadly it remains the same.
The government has extended its earlier deadline to link the two by four months, which means, people can link their PAN with Aadhaar till December 31.
Now select the "Search Element" as Registration number or License.
IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government is planning to link driving license with Aadhaar card. Digital governance is good governance.
Ravi Shankar Prasad in his speech said that Aadhaar is a digital identity and not a physical identity. The government has also made it mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN and for filing income tax returns.
Earlier in April, it was reported that the Union cabinet had chose to link issue of driving licences and vehicle registration to Aadhaar.
The minister also said questions around privacy are being raised with increase in digitisation. On June 16, the government made quoting of Aadhaar mandatory for the opening of bank accounts as well as for any financial transaction of Rs 50,000 and above.
