Yonkers Police Officer Shot in Face; Suspects in Custody

"We have an officer shot in the face", another officer is heard saying on radio transmissions from Broadcastify.com.

The officer, from the 3rd Precinct of the Yonkers Police Department, was grazed in the chin from a blast from an AK-47, sources said.

Police said the incident happened on Marshall Road at Ridge Drive at about 8 p.m. The officer and her partner responding to a call in the neighborhood. "As they approached the auto, they immediately caught gunfire".

The men began firing on the officers as they approached and one officer was hit in the jaw, the Yonkers police commissioner said.

A dispatcher at the Yonkers Fire Department says the officer was alert and speaking while she was being taken to a hospital in the Bronx, but could not give the officer's current condition.

The officer was also taken to the hospital. She called police, who told her to stay inside.

"It could have been much worse, thank God the officer didn't sustain a life-threatening injuries", Gardner said. One of them underwent surgery and was listed in serious but stable condition. "Thank God she's going to be OK".

Yonkers police say investigators recovered a gun at the scene. The officers then returned fire.

One of the men was struck and both of the culprits were taken into custody, officials said.
