Yanks give Judge, Frazier thumbs down in 13-5 rout Orioles

The Yankees couldn't finish off a sweep of the Orioles missing out on a key chance to gain ground on the division-leading Red Sox

"It's been really good, and it has come from all kind of places in our lineup, " manager Joe Girardi said after his team clobbered the Orioles, 9-3, Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The pitching part of Girardi's statement is accurate as the Yankees are outscoring the Orioles 30-10 in this series, but his team's domination of the Orioles is mostly based on offense.

Bird admits he had "not doubted, but wondered sometimes" whether he'd make it back this season; he was limited to only 60 at-bats until late August due to a lingering injury stemming from fouling a ball off his foot/ankle area at the end of spring training.

In the lineup after sitting out Friday with lower back stiffness, Frazier drove home Gregorius with a 416-foot drive to center in the seventh.

The Yankees are batting.337 in the series so far, and they are hitting.318 (205-for-644) against the Orioles. "It's a combination of us not swinging it well and them really pitching well", said Orioles manager Buck Showalter, whose team has posted a 10.66 ERA in NY a 7.77 overall against the Yankees.

Starting a stretch that has them home for 14 of their final 17 games, the Yankees remained three games behind AL East-leading Boston and three games ahead of Minnesota for the top AL wild card.

But the Yankees tied it in the bottom half. Meanwhile, Baltimore's hopes are fading fast since Manny Machado slugged a game-ending homer off Dellin Betances on September 5.

The Mets had lost eight straight on the road and had just four wins in their last 18 games away from Citi Field, but they led 5-0 by the fourth inning.

"It's never easy", Bird said. He struck seven and walked one while throwing 95 pitches. "That's a bad combination".

Rookie Austin Hays recorded his first hit and first homer with a two-run shot in the ninth off Chasen Shreve. They have 15 games left, 12 of them at home.

Castro, who has earned Manager Buck Showalter's trust in the middle innings with men on, allowed a tiebreaking two-run homer to Gregorius on the second batter he faced after relieving Ynoa.

It marked the fifth time the Yankees produced one run or fewer in his starts, which have been each of his losses with them.

Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery (8-7) allowed four hits in six innings. The veteran right-hander is 2-5 with a 7.29 ERA since being traded from Philadelphia on July 28.

The Yankees announced that Mastercard cardholders can purchase postseason tickets pre-on-sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19. The 30-year-old is 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 10 career games (eight starts) against NY.

Severino (13-6) allowed two runs on three hits and little else while improving to 8-2 in 12 starts since the All-Star break.

Jimenez is 4-6 with a 6.75 ERA in 14 career starts (13 starts) against the Yankees.

Kris Bryant added two RBIs as the Cubs extended their NL Central lead to three games over Milwaukee and St. Louis, with the Cardinals coming to Wrigley Field for three games this weekend (see full recap).

With two outs in the sixth and the White Sox holding a comfortable seven-run lead over Detroit, the second baseman didn't get to a grounder by JaCoby Jones, keeping the inning alive Thursday.
