US Proposes Military Ties With Myanmar Amid Rohingya Crisis

Myanmar leader cancels plan to attend UN General Assembly session amid Rohingya Crisis

Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims flee from the country's ongoing military operations in Rakhine state into Bangladesh. The total, during the period from August 25 through Sunday, is 19,000 more than Saturday's estimate of 294,000.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamana Monday also lashed out at sections of the Muslim community in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, for hitting the streets last Friday to protest atrocities on Rohingya Muslims.

Speaking at the start of the latest Human Rights Council session, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein first recognized the September 11 attacks anniversary then chronicled human rights concerns about Myanmar.

"The global community and Muslim countries expect the government of Myanmar to put an immediate end to the ongoing violence against Rohingya Muslim community and allow unhindered access of humanitarian assistance to the violence-stricken regions", Zarif said.

"Further normalization of the military-to-military relationship with Burma is the last thing we should be doing right now", said Walter Lohman, Asia program director at the right-leaning Heritage Foundation. The visit comes amidst global outcry over the persecution of Rohingyas Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine region.

"We have received multiple reports and satellite imagery of security forces and local militia burning Rohingya villages, and consistent accounts of extrajudicial killings, including shooting fleeing civilians", he said.

Myanmar's abuses against Rohingya Muslims amount to a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing", a senior United Nations human rights officials said on Monday.

India's PM condemned a series of coordinated attacks by Rohingya militants on Myanmar troops and police, late August, but did not comment on the subsequent violence against the Rohingya and their mass exodus.

But the government does not recognize them as one of the country's many ethnic groups, considering them instead to be illegal migrants from Bangladesh, and they are often portrayed by ultra-nationalist Buddhist groups as a "threat to race and religion". For this, Washington is implementing a policy of engagement with Myanmar, while ignoring the regime's violation of global law and human rights.

Since the 1970s, a number of crackdowns on Rohingya in Rakhine State have forced hundreds of thousands to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh, as well as Malaysia, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries.

The Brussels-based International Crisis Group warns that an "alienated, desperate and dispossessed" Rohingya population is now ripe for exploitation by jihadists.

Mr Zeid, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the current operation in Rakhine was "clearly disproportionate". Myanmar authorities deny any wrongdoing.

The Buddha "would definitely give help to those poor Muslims", the Dalai Lama said.

The Trump administration has reluctantly expressed concerns about the state-sponsored violence against the Rohingya but refused to address calls for worldwide sanctions against Suu Kyi's government.

"It is expected that the United Nations act swiftly and undertake all necessary measures towards addressing global concerns about the deteriorating situation in Myanmar", Zarif said in a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres published on Friday.

On Saturday, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the government will contribute up to $4 million to humanitarian aid organisations working in Bangladesh.

He also said the government would be registering the new arrivals on Monday.

The violence has driven almost 300,000 Rohingya to flee Buddhist-majority Myanmar, with many of them packed into existing camps or huddled in makeshift settlements that have mushroomed along roadsides and in open fields across Cox's Bazar district on the border.

The Department of Immigration and Passports began the registration at 8:00pm ahead of Hasina's visit to Cox's Bazar today.
